CMCC Position cod. 12829 – Postdoc researcher in ocean numerical modelling

Deadline: July 15th, 2026

Overview

Are you ready to join a dynamic research team where initiative, creativity, and scientific expertise can make a tangible impact? We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a 2‑year position focused on ocean and sea‑ice modelling using unstructured‑grid ocean models. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and application of advanced numerical modelling approaches for both global and regional ocean systems, with particular emphasis on multiscale ocean dynamics and their interaction with sea ice. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment, contributing to model development, numerical experiments, data analysis and the interpretation of simulation results.

Role

The postdoctoral researcher will report to the team leader and contribute to the development, validation, and assessment of numerical methods for a global unstructured‑mesh ocean general circulation model. The research activities will focus on key numerical components of ocean modelling, with particular attention to the accuracy, stability and computational efficiency of the numerical methods developed.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to some or all of the following activities:

  • Contributing to the design and implementation of scale‑dependent processes, numerical schemes, parameterisations, and computational workflows for global ocean modelling applications.
  • Developing, configuring, and running global ocean simulations using unstructured‑grid modelling approaches.
  • Testing and evaluating model performance across different spatial resolutions and dynamical regimes.
  • Analysing model outputs to investigate large‑scale and multiscale ocean dynamics, including ocean circulation, mesoscale and submesoscale processes, air‑sea interactions and ocean variability.
  • Supporting model validation through comparisons with observations, reanalysis products and other numerical simulations.
  • Working with high‑performance computing platforms for large‑scale numerical simulations and data processing.
  • Contributing to scientific publications, technical documentation, project deliverables and presentations at national and international conferences and meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Physical Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related disciplines, with a background in numerical methods and modelling.
  • Experience in the development of numerical methods applied to geophysical fluid dynamics problems.
  • Experience in the development and/or application of ocean circulation models, preferably using unstructured meshes.
  • Advanced programming skills in both compiled (e.g. Fortran) and interpreted (e.g. Python) languages, as well as solid experience with scientific and visualization libraries (e.g. xarray, pandas, Plotly, Matplotlib).
  • Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and scripting languages (e.g. *nix shell).
  • Knowledge of parallel programming and high‑performance computing (HPC) architectures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two recommendation letters.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment, with a proactive and collegial attitude, and a strong commitment to open knowledge sharing and the advancement of ocean science.

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and work experience.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
  • The researcher will be based in Bologna CMCC Office.

PROTECTED CATEGORY

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition. Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).
