Deputy CTO

On behalf of our client, a fast-growing AI company, we are currently looking for a Deputy CTO for a permanent position.

Project/Customer background

The client is scaling its AI platform across enterprise customers and is building local technical leadership in Italy to support sales, architecture, integrations, delivery and production deployment of AI agents.

They are looking for a senior technical profile who can operate close to customers, support technical sales conversations, lead complex implementations and help scale the local technical team.

Role background

The selected candidate will act as a senior technical leader, partnering closely with the Field CTO on technical sales engagements, early-stage customer conversations, demos, architecture and security discussions.

The role includes contributing hands-on as an engineer, building integrations, owning customer implementations end-to-end and supporting the scale-up of technical teams across engineering, integrations and pre-sales.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, commercially aware and credible with enterprise customers. This is not a classic corporate CTO role. The person needs to combine engineering depth, customer-facing experience, leadership potential and strong ownership in a fast-moving environment.

Location: Milan/Rome, Italy. 3 days a week in the office

Language: English and Italian

Skills:

- 7–8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience

- Strong background in building and shipping production software

- Experience in pre-sales, solution architecture or complex technical implementations

- Customer-facing experience as Solutions Architect, Deployed Engineer, Senior Sales Engineer or similar

- Ability to translate between technical and business audiences

- Strong architecture, integration and security decision-making skills

- Experience owning customer integrations from scoping through deployment

- Emerging leadership skills, including managing small teams, workstreams or technical execution

- High autonomy, strong ownership and ability to operate in a zero-to-one environment

Nice to have:

- Experience in fast-moving startups where speed and ownership matter

- Experience scaling technical teams across engineering, integrations and pre-sales

- Experience with AI agents, automation, enterprise software or platform implementation

- Experience managing critical customer escalations

- Strong product mindset and ability to turn customer feedback into product insights
