Position and Programme

Operations Directorate (OPS) – Public Sector Department (PS) – Advisory – Public & Infrastructure Finance Division (1-APIF) – Environment and Social Infrastructure Unit (ESI)

Tra​inee

Duration: 5 months (fixed start date 1st September/October 2026) with a possible extension up to 6 months if required by University.

Applicants must be nationals of the European Union Member States. Candidates whose Erasmus+ programme overlaps with the traineeship duration will not be considered.

Objective

The trainee will join a specialized Division that supports public‑private promoters in delivering climate‑friendly and green infrastructure projects. The role contributes to identifying eligible projects, accelerating their development to bankability, and ensuring effective implementation. The trainee will learn to assess risks, design financing strategies, and implement projects through planning, transaction structuring, procurement, and implementation.

Advisory Support Provided

  • Downstream “Project‑focused” work – (pre)feasibility analysis, procurement and financing strategies, business design and financial engineering, and transactional support for complex infrastructure projects across various sectors.
  • Upstream “Project‑enabling” work – programming, policy, and institutional advice on thematic and sectorial investment topics; market studies; actionable recommendations; and design of new financial products to create a pipeline of investable projects.
  • Hosting the European PPP Expertise Centre (EPEC) initiative, providing strategic advisory support and market information on PPP projects since 2008.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying and screening infrastructure projects aligned with EIB policy objectives and in developing an internal and external business network.
  • Contribute to scoping, preparation, and approval of advisory proposals for target clients.
  • Provide advisory support on innovative delivery models, financing, procurement, risk management, and risk allocation for complex projects.
  • Coordinate delivery of tailor‑made, multi‑disciplinary advisory support with joint teams of EIB experts and external consultants.
  • Assist with client communications and preparation of advisory status reports.
  • Support design, scoping, and delivery of “project‑enabling” advisory assignments such as market studies and policy programmes.
  • Track trends and developments in selected infrastructure sectors to anticipate evolving advisory needs across the EU.

Qualifications

  • Final year of studies or university degree in Economics, Finance, Business, Science, or Engineering.
  • Strong analytical, qualitative and quantitative skills.
  • Experience with corporate/investment banking, private/institutional investors, or project management is advantageous.
  • Excellent self‑organisational skills, planning, prioritisation, and anticipation of potential issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills at all levels with internal and external contacts.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Initiative and problem‑solving attitude.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and/or French; knowledge of other EU languages is an advantage.
