Job Overview

Position: Maintenance Field Engineer – Naples, Italy.

Hitachi Rail seeks a self‑motivated engineer who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, responsible for statistical analysis of maintenance data, deep train knowledge and tactical support for maintenance operations.

Accountabilities

  • Assure RAM data collection in service operation of vehicles, defining data records structure according to contractual requirements.
  • Support System Support Engineering to manage vehicle and product configuration, ensuring traceability of each vehicle and maintaining configuration.
  • Manage infrastructure‑based systems (MRX, PanMon, Gotcha, etc.) to receive notifications and maintenance alerts and develop condition‑based maintenance solutions.
  • Provide performance analysis and improvement recommendations for engineering support IT systems to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support Bid & Proposal activities, defining the budget for new bidding initiatives.
  • Update spare part lists issued by Bid & Proposal in collaboration with Mobilization Engineering per maintenance plan and RAM analyses.
  • Conduct Level of Repair Analysis (LORA) to define efficient corrective maintenance and give feedback to Rolling Stock Design Engineering and Standards & Training.
  • Support maintenance operations, troubleshoot, and manage maintenance activities, analysing technical issues and proposing corrective actions per System Support Engineering indications.
  • Prepare technical specifications for depot tools, interface with suppliers, arrange design review, and coordinate installation, testing and commissioning with Operational support.
  • Offer training to team members and customers with the support of Standard & Training.
  • Conduct failure analysis for extrawarranty both for customers and suppliers.
  • Manage warranties with suppliers.
  • Validate the Maintenance Manual and propose upgrade modifications.
  • Develop continuous improvement of maintenance activities by proposing newly designed tools.
  • Possess vehicle remote diagnostics knowledge and data validation.
  • Report maintenance and safety defects, operational events, and failures.
  • Present operating data (RAM data) to the customer.
  • Develop technical documentation for workshops, ensuring compliance with safety requirements.
  • Ensure implementation of maintenance plans at depot and external sites from the commissioning phase.
  • Support Project Team activities through on‑field analyses, including:
    • Supporting Standards & Training in engineering procedures and practices development.
    • Optimising execution of maintenance regimes and assisting in developing optimised practices for current and future contracts.
    • Performing small modifications on components and hardware related to materials or processes.
  • Execute continuous improvement programmes for Operations (data collection, management, return‑of‑experience).
  • Support Procurement and Operations during assessment and approval of new/second‑source suppliers.
  • Support Quality Control function in reporting component or train failures, assessing component reparability and safety risk.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Experience in the above accountabilities.
  • Minimum 3 years in railway vehicle maintenance engineering.
  • Experience in maintenance plan optimisation, complex troubleshooting and RAMS analysis.
  • Willingness to undertake large‑scale regional projects.
  • Ability to perform vehicle system diagnosis and analysis.
  • Understanding of contract specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics and pneumatic plans.
  • Availability for short trips (days) at least 60 % of the time.

Desired Skills & Knowledge

  • Previous experience as Maintenance Field Engineer on railway fleets.
  • Knowledge of rail train subsystems (ATS, vehicle, telecommunication, STB, pneumatic brake, traction converter, high‑voltage gear, HVAC).
  • Ability to review maintenance documentation from sub‑suppliers.
  • Basic knowledge of software configuration management (CM).
  • Experience with wheel‑set parameters.
  • Basic statistical analysis program skills.
  • Understanding of operation and maintenance processes.
  • Experience in ECM projects and homologation planning.
  • Knowledge of railway operations and signalling principles.
  • SAP environment knowledge.
  • Planning and organisational skills.
  • Spare‑part analysis, definition and forecasting based on return‑of‑experience.
  • Willingness to design for maintainability and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working in industrial environments (warehouses, rolling‑stock depots).

Education & Qualifications

Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic Degree or equivalent technical background.

Languages

English proficiency.
