General Description of the Role

The R&D Packaging Engineer is a key technical and strategic leader responsible for driving packaging excellence, innovation, productivity, and global standardization across all packaging formats. The role provides functional leadership and technical direction to ensure packaging solutions deliver operational efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability, while maintaining a premium brand experience and full compliance with global standards.

The role plays a critical part in shaping the future of packaging across our global portfolio by aligning packaging strategies with company standards, technological roadmaps, and sustainability objectives. A core focus is enabling Scope 3 greenhouse gas reduction through packaging by driving circularity, recyclability, material optimization, and systemic improvements. The R&D Packaging Engineer leads and coordinates early‑stage research, innovation, and cross‑functional initiatives, leveraging technology, standards, and best practices to support the company vision for circularity and long‑term value creation.

Key Responsibilities and Activities

  • Act as a global technical reference for packaging, providing functional leadership and guidance across regions and categories
  • Drive alignment of packaging activities with global standards, technological roadmaps, and long‑term business strategy
  • Contribute to the definition, governance, and continuous improvement of global packaging standards, design principles, and technical guidelines
  • Ensure consistency, scalability, and robustness of packaging solutions across the global portfolio
  • Support, lead or coordinate initiatives aimed at reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions through packaging‑related levers
  • Drive the implementation of circular economy principles in packaging
  • Partner with Sustainability, Procurement, and suppliers to assess environmental impact using LCA and other analytical tools
  • Support compliance with global and regional packaging sustainability regulations (e.g. EPR, PPWR, local recycling schemes)
  • Identify and drive packaging productivity opportunities across the portfolio
  • Promote a value‑driven mindset, balancing sustainability, cost, operational efficiency, and premium positioning
  • Lead and support early‑stage research and exploratory activities related to materials, technologies, and packaging systems
  • Drive or coordinate innovation and incubation programs, from ideation through proof‑of‑concept and technology validation
  • Lead technical collaboration with suppliers, technology providers, startups, and research institutions
  • Support open innovation initiatives and external partnerships focused on sustainability, circularity, and technology advancement

Experience Required

3-5 years of experience in Packaging R&D, Packaging Technology, or Packaging Engineering, preferably in multinational or global matrix organizations (e.g. FMCG, Food & Beverage, Pharma, Consumer Goods, Industrial)

Education / Professional Qualifications

Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Packaging Engineering
  • Materials Science / Materials Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • or a closely related technical field

Training or experience in:

  • Sustainability, Circular Economy, or Environmental Engineering
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or carbon accounting
  • Design‑for‑recycling and eco‑design
  • Product or technology lifecycle management
  • Productivity or Lean / Value Engineering principles

Skills

  • Understanding of packaging materials and systems (plastics, paper‑based materials, metals, glass) and their performance, converting, and industrialization constraints
  • Knowledge of packaging design principles, global standards, specifications, and compliance requirements
  • Ability to assess packaging solutions from a system‑level perspective, balancing performance, sustainability, cost manufacturability, and brand experience
  • Familiarity with packaging sustainability principles, including recyclability, eco‑design, and circular economy framework
  • Knowledge of Scope 3 emissions levers related to packaging and product systems
  • Ability to evaluate environmental impacts using LCA concepts, carbon footprint metrics, and sustainability assessment tools
  • Team working (i.e. ability to work with others across all boundaries to reach common objectives)
  • Ability to work effectively in cross‑functional and international teams
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good knowledge of English (spoken and written) in a technical/business environment. Other languages are a plus
  • Proactive, curious, and continuous improvement mindset
  • Good negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to align the different interests of internal parties
  • Ability to develop and make presentations
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Flexible to travel extensively both domestically and internationally
