Optical Scientist

Role: To contribute to the development and experimental validation of advanced optical solutions for artificial lighting systems designed to reproduce natural light conditions. The position focuses on the optimization of compact and efficient optical architectures through numerical simulation, optical design and laboratory verification activities, ensuring consistency between modelled behavior and real-world prototype performance.

Main responsibilities

• Design and optimize optical systems for advanced lighting devices using numerical simulation and optical modeling tools.
• Investigate and evaluate alternative optical configurations aimed at improving compactness, efficiency, beam collimation and light uniformity.
• Perform simulation and validation activities to compare modelled optical behavior with experimental results obtained from laboratory prototypes.
• Analyze the interaction between optical, mechanical, electronic and functional aspects of complex illumination systems.
• Contribute to the integration and characterization of nanostructured diffusive materials for advanced light management applications.
• Carry out laboratory testing activities using optical measurement instrumentation and experimental validation methodologies.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D teams involved in optical simulation, prototyping and product development activities.

Skills

• Knowledge of optics and micro-optics, including beam shaping and collimation techniques for LED-based systems.
• Experience in optical component and system design through specialized simulation software such as Zemax, Ansys SPEOS, LightTools or equivalent environments.
• Familiarity with numerical modeling approaches for optical system analysis and optimization.
• Experience in laboratory testing and experimental characterization of optical prototypes.
• Ability to evaluate optical, mechanical, electronic and functional aspects of complex systems.
• Knowledge of optical measurement equipment and laboratory instrumentation.
• Familiarity with data analysis tools and experimental validation methodologies.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary industrial research teams and communicate technical results clearly.

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE required by the position

• MSc in Physics, Mathematical/Physical Engineering (degree obtained within the last five years)
• Background or experience in optics, photonics, illumination technologies or industrial R& activities involving optical systems.
• Experience with LED technologies and advanced optical solutions is considered an advantage.
• Fluent English (written and spoken).
