Optical / Laser Communication System Engineer – Italy (Hybrid)

With a strong reputation for pushing technical boundaries, they play a key role in shaping the future of space-based optical communications and ground station infrastructure. As part of their continued growth, we are looking for a Laser Communication System Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team working on cutting‑edge optical systems for both terrestrial and space environments. This is a highly collaborative environment where engineering excellence, innovation, and hands‑on problem‑solving are at the core of everything they do.
The Role
As a Lasercomm System Engineer, you will contribute to the design and development of advanced optical ground systems and laser communication technologies, supporting projects from early concept through to testing and validation.
- Lead system‑level activities for optical ground stations and laser communication systems
- Define system architecture, sizing, and performance budgets
- Manage subsystem requirements and interface definitions
- Perform analysis, modelling, and simulation of optical systems
- Define verification and validation strategies
- Support integration, verification, and experimental testing (lab and field)
- Produce high‑quality technical documentation
- Coordinate subcontractors and oversee technical delivery
- Act as a technical interface with customers and stakeholders
Your Background
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related field
- ~3+ years of experience in optical systems, particularly within laser communications or photonics
- Strong team player with a proactive and detail‑oriented mindset
- Comfortable working across multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electronics, operations)
- Good communication skills in English
Key Skills & Experience
- Hands‑on experience in at least one of the following:
- Free‑space optical satellite communications
- Satellite laser ranging
- Laser beam propagation
- Laser physics and photonics
- Experience with system‑level design and performance analysis
- Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, or Octave
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities
- Ability to contribute across the full system lifecycle
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of adaptive optics and wavefront sensing
- Experience in optical detection and communication systems
- Familiarity with pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems
- Experience with optical design/simulation tools (e.g. Zemax)
- Familiarity with requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS)
- Experience working with external partners or subcontractors
