Optical / Laser Communication System Engineer – Italy (Hybrid) Full-Time, Permanent
NewSpace Technical is partnered with an innovative European engineering company at the forefront of optical and laser‑based technologies for space and ground applications. With a strong reputation for pushing technical boundaries, they play a key role in shaping the future of space‑based optical communications and ground station infrastructure. As part of their continued growth, we are looking for a Laser Communication System Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team working on cutting‑edge optical systems for both terrestrial and space environments. This is a highly collaborative environment where engineering excellence, innovation, and hands‑on problem solving are at the core of everything they do.
Responsibilities
- Leading system‑level activities for optical ground stations and laser communication systems.
- Defining system architecture, sizing, and performance budgets.
- Managing subsystem requirements and interface definitions.
- Performing analysis, modelling, and simulation of optical systems.
- Defining verification and validation strategies.
- Supporting integration, verification, and experimental testing (lab and field).
- Producing high‑quality technical documentation.
- Coordinating subcontractors and overseeing technical delivery.
- Acting as a technical interface with customers and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- ~3+ years of experience in optical systems, particularly within laser communications or photonics.
- Strong team player with a proactive and detail‑oriented mindset.
- Comfortable working across multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electronics, operations).
- Good communication skills in English.
Key Skills & Experience
- Hands‑on experience in at least one of the following:
- Free‑space optical satellite communications
- Satellite laser ranging
- Laser beam propagation
- Laser physics and photonics
- Experience with system‑level design and performance analysis.
- Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, or Octave.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities.
- Ability to contribute across the full system lifecycle.
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of adaptive optics and wavefront sensing.
- Experience in optical detection and communication systems.
- Familiarity with pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems.
- Experience with optical design/simulation tools (e.g., Zemax).
- Familiarity with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS).
- Experience working with external partners or subcontractors.
