Payroll Partner (Fixed Term - 1 year) | People Team
Milano
Team Description
SumUp's People Operations team keeps our people experience running smoothly across Europe — and payroll sits right at the heart of that. As we grow rapidly across Southern Europe, we’re looking for a Payroll Partner to join us on a one-year fixed-term contract, taking full ownership of the payroll cycle for Spain and Italy. This is a solid next step for someone with a few years of payroll experience who’s ready to go beyond the basics — driving real process improvements, working across two markets, and contributing to a People team that builds smarter, more efficient ways of working.
What You’ll Do
- Own the end-to-end payroll cycle for Spain and Italy, ensuring accuracy and compliance with local laws and regulations
- Spot and implement opportunities for automation and process improvement, using tools like Workday and Payslip to reduce manual effort and sharpen payroll quality
- Handle employee payroll queries through our ticketing system, resolving issues with care and efficiency
- Collaborate with People Operations, Compensation and Benefits, and Accounting to keep payroll data accurate and up to date
- Support the regional payroll lead in managing relationships with external providers, including health insurers and pension providers
- Review and update country-level payroll policies and procedures as the business evolves
What We’re Looking For
- Hands‑on payroll experience covering the full cycle, with familiarity processing payroll in Spain or Italy
- Solid understanding of Spanish and/or Italian labour and tax law, with the confidence to apply it independently
- Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables and VLOOKUPs, and a natural comfort with data accuracy and attention to detail
- Experience working cross‑functionally and communicating clearly with different teams and stakeholders
- A proactive approach to process improvement, with an interest in automation tools and finding smarter ways to work
- Fluency in English plus Spanish or Italian
Benefits
- Opportunity to work with SumUppers globally on large‑scale fintech products used by millions of businesses worldwide, from our Milano office (office‑first setup)
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion: be part of a workplace that values and promotes diversity, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone’s perspectives are respected and embraced
- Enrollment into our Virtual Stock Option programme: you will own a stake in SumUp’s future success
- A dedicated annual L&D budget of €2000 for your individual development, usable for conferences or further education
- Generous time off: 22 days of paid leave plus public holidays and special leave days
- Subsidised restaurant tickets and office breakfast on Mondays
- Break4me: a 1‑month sabbatical after 3 years of service
- Referral bonus: earn additional rewards by referring talented individuals to join the SumUp team
