PhD Opportunity in AI and particle physics: DeepDose – Real-Time AI for Safer Proton Therapy (Rome & Grenoble)

Università di Roma Tor Vergata · Lazio, Roma, Italia ·

Descrizione dell'offerta

Transform Cancer Care with DeepDose

Are you driven by the idea of changing the future of cancer care with artificial intelligence and advanced physics? Join the DeepDose project—a unique international collaboration that will put you at the heart of research in real-time, 3D dose mapping for proton therapy. You’ll be pioneering technology that brings next-generation clinical precision directly to patients worldwide.

Join Italy’s Flagship PhD in AI & Life Sciences

As a DeepDose PhD researcher, you will be officially enrolled in the highly selective Italian National PhD in Artificial Intelligence – Health & Life Sciences program. This program is the flagship initiative in Italy for training AI leaders in healthcare, offering you structured coursework, interdisciplinary exchanges, international workshops, and a robust academic and professional network.

A Truly International Research Experience

Your PhD journey will be shared between two world-class institutions: the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the CNRS-LPSC in Grenoble . Here, you’ll collaborate with leading scientists in AI, detector technology, and medical physics, building AI systems that move seamlessly from code to clinic. You’ll have access to ERC-funded detector technology, a robust Monte Carlo data pipeline, and extensive partnerships with clinical centers across Europe. Your algorithms will process terabytes of prompt-gamma detector signals and patient imaging, delivering sub-second, physics-aware dose maps that enable real-time, adaptive proton therapy.

Build AI That Truly Understands Physics

DeepDose is not just about developing AI that predicts; it’s about building systems that understand —integrating the fundamental laws of physics, energy conservation, and clinical realities into every model. You’ll see your work tested in real proton therapy centers, with a direct route to clinical implementation and patient benefit.

Who Are We Looking For?

We’re looking for motivated physicists (medical, nuclear, or particle), or computational scientists/engineers with a strong foundation in physics and a passion for scientific programming (Python or similar). Experience with Monte Carlo simulation (Geant4, GATE, FLUKA, etc.) is an asset, as is a readiness to learn advanced AI and collaborate in multidisciplinary, English-speaking teams.

Your PhD Package

This is a fully funded, three-year PhD position, based in Rome and Grenoble, with additional opportunities to visit leading partner centers in Europe. The start date is flexible, with a preference for late 2025 . You’ll receive a competitive stipend, mobility funding, and the support of a diverse, welcoming research environment.
