OverviewCandidate will conduct research within a 3+ year Australian Research Council Discovery Project at UNSW Sydney, advancing extreme value theory for random dynamical systems through functional analysis, operator theory, and ergodic theory. The project includes applications to nonstationary spatiotemporal data from weather and climate observations/models.LocationSYDNEY, AUSTRALIACompensation & DurationLevel A – $113,000 – $121,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading. Fixed term: 2 years. Full-time (35 hours per week).Specific ResponsibilitiesDevelop theory that significantly advances extreme value theory for random dynamical systems.Develop and implement algorithms to efficiently analyse extreme value statistics in nonstationary dynamical systems arising from idealised models or data.Collaborative publications in leading international mathematical and scientific journals.Provide comprehensive analysis and reports related to the research project in a timely and effective manner.Perform small‑team research, coordinate research activities, and participate in setting future research directions of the project.Assist with the supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students.Present results of research at conferences and other venues.Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university.About the Successful ApplicantA PhD in Mathematics (or closely related discipline) or close to completion, preferably in ergodic theory or dynamical systems.Excellent oral and written communication skills.An outstanding track record of research publications.Demonstrated high‑level analytical and problem‑solving skills.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.Demonstrated capacity to deliver high‑quality project outcomes in a timely manner.Computer programming experience, preferably with Julia and/or Matlab.Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values, and relevant policies.Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant training.Pre‑Employment ChecksNational and International Criminal history checksEntitlement to work and ID checksWorking With Children ChecksCompletion of a Gender‑Based Violence Prevention DeclarationVerification of relevant qualificationsVerification of relevant professional membershipEmployment history and reference checksFinancial responsibility assessments/checksMedical Checks and AssessmentsEEO StatementUNSW is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion.
