The Lubricants Technology Group within P&T is the technology department of Shell Global Lubricants. Meeting future business growth objectives requires significant effort in next generation product and service solutions and innovation.

The Lubricants Discovery Hub is a dedicated innovation team that addresses challenges that require going back to the drawing board, with the aims to establish how good we could be if we pushed the boundaries. The team works to develop the tools that will enable or demonstrate step change in performance, and to deliver new approaches that Product & Service Development Teams can confidently use for future developments.

What’s the role

Technical Project Management: Deliver lubricants technology projects on time, on-scope, and on-budget, driving alignment with technology, business, and 3rd party stakeholders. Projects vary and include, but are not limited to, e-mobility and e-fluids, sustainability, co‑engineering with equipment manufacturers, fluid performance evaluation and development, technical communication, digital and lubrication science.

Innovation: Work closely with appropriate business and technology stakeholders to define, manage and stage-gate specific innovation projects based on established technology themes.

External Focus & Collaboration: Support future business direction by maintaining and communicating awareness of external technology trends. Contribute to external conferences and facilitate technical discussions in customer meetings or events.

Responsibilities

  • Define project objectives, communicate findings and deliver solutions, in close collaboration with internal and external customers.
  • Drive the integration of experimental and data analysis activities.
  • Present research internally and at conferences, to provide regular updates/reports, to author and/or approve internal Shell reports, as well as scientific papers for publication.
  • Develop contacts and research collaborations within the Department and wider external community to further the project aims.
  • Identify/propose new research projects to leadership, shaping the Discovery Hub program.
  • Manage specific projects in the portfolio and for interactions with relevant third parties.
  • Lead diverse global technical projects as part of the extended Lubricants Discovery Hub team reporting to one of the Discovery Hub Technology Managers.
  • Accountable for individual project and program budgets within a high-impact global technical community.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full‑time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Masters or PhD Degree in Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or any related field.
  • Four plus (4+) years’ experience in hardware testing (engine, vehicle, or equipment), finished lubricant testing and chemistry, tribology, rheology, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or lubricant field applications.
  • Skillful with project management and delivery in global teams.
  • Passion for delivery of technology innovation: natural curiosity about how things work, how they can be improved and a focus on opportunities that will generate business value.
  • Experienced in designing and executing research projects, confident in handling large data sets.
  • Knowledge of managing Intellectual Property.
  • Experience in computational modeling and data analytics is a plus.
  • Collaboration and commercial mindset: strong record of cross‑team collaboration and interfacing with business and external partners (e.g., customers, suppliers, test houses, universities, etc.).
  • Ability to tailor research projects to meet commercial objectives.
  • Self‑starting: highly motivated, able to take the initiative, define and deliver project output independently.
