This position is based in Australia. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is looking for a Research Associate / Senior Research Associate to work on the structural health monitoring of metallic and composite structures produced by advanced automated manufacturing processes. The candidate will contribute to industry‑focused research projects, collaborate with academic and industry partners, and support the delivery of high‑impact outcomes that advance both fundamental knowledge and real‑world applications. Responsibilities

Carry out research on the design and simulation of composite structures. Contribute to scientific papers and reports for international journals. Participate in conferences and workshops. Supervise HDR (Doctoral) students. Engage actively with industry partners.

Qualifications Research Associate (Level A)

PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Materials, Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace or Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline. Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision. Understanding of engineering design fundamentals and properties of materials and composites. Experience in modelling and simulation of metallic and composite structures. Experience in composites manufacturing, testing, and data analysis. Track record of publications and conference presentations relevant to the opportunity. Experience in contributing to proposals for competitive external funding. Teamwork and collaboration across disciplines. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Commitment to UNSW’s values and compliance with health and safety policies.

Senior Research Associate (Level B)

PhD in an area relevant to manufacturing, mechanical, aerospace, robotics, or related engineering. Understanding of engineering design fundamentals and properties of materials and composites. Experience in modelling and simulation of metallic and composite structures. Experience in composites manufacturing, testing, and data analysis. Strong publication record and conference presentations. Experience translating research into practical outcomes. Successful track record of attracting research funding from government or industry. Excellent communication skills and networking ability. Experience supervising research students. Experience collaborating with industry partners on research projects. Teamwork and collaboration across disciplines. Willingness to undertake required compliance and supervisor training. Commitment to UNSW’s values and adherence to health and safety responsibilities.

Salary and Contract

Research Associate (Level A): AUD 113,911–121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation. Senior Research Associate (Level B, Step 1): AUD 127,947 per annum + 17% superannuation. Full‑time, fixed‑term contract – 18 months.
