Research Associate – UNSW Defence‑funded project
Location: Sydney, NSW. Position type: Full Time, Fixed‑term 9 months. Salary: 91,381 – 121,838 AUD per annum plus 17% superannuation.
The Defence‑funded research project aims to develop large‑language‑model (LLM) agent‑driven tools that reconstruct network topology, services, and administrator intent from partial information during crises, enabling rapid situational awareness across diverse, multi‑vendor environments. The role reports to Professor Salil Kanhere, Dr. Rahat Masood and A/Prof. Gustavo Batista and carries no direct reports.
Responsibilities
Conduct independent research to develop LLM‑driven tools for network reconstruction and situational awareness.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within UNSW and external partners to design, test, and validate methodologies.
Analyse and model complex network protocols and services using simulations and real‑world data.
Publish findings in top‑rated journals and conferences.
Supervise undergraduate students or junior staff on related projects.
Qualifications
PhD (or soon to be awarded) in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in computer networking, network protocols, routing and performance measurement.
Hands‑on experience with networking tools, simulators and network analysis.
Strong background in machine learning and large‑language‑model usage.
Track record of independent research with limited supervision.
Proven publication record in top‑rated journals and conferences.
Excellent teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
Eligibility Applicants must be Australian citizens, or citizens of New Zealand, Canada, USA, UK, or NATO member countries. Visa sponsorship is not available.
