Research & Innovation Engineer (Materials Development)

Lima (Enovis group) is looking for a Research & Innovation Engineer to join the Materials Development team within the R&I department in San Daniele (UD), Italy. This critical role will support the research, development, and characterization of advanced materials for current and next-generation orthopaedic implants used in joint arthroplasty. The R&I Engineer will be responsible for working with a team of engineers and scientists in the design, testing, and validation of new materials and material processing techniques, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and business objectives. Main responsibilities:
- Participate in materials research and development, aligned with the company's product roadmap and long-term vision.
- Oversee the design, execution, and analysis of experiments to evaluate the mechanical, physical, and biological properties of candidate materials and document results.
- Contribute to the material selection and characterization for new product development projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and marketing, to ensure seamless integration of new materials into product designs and manufacturing processes.
- Maintain awareness of current and emerging materials technologies relevant to orthopaedic implants and identify opportunities for innovation.
- Maintain Enovis’ global portfolio of proprietary materials platforms and support new product development applications.
- Prepare and present technical reports, presentations, and contribute to publications summarizing research findings.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant quality system regulations and procedures.
- Embrace and share the culture of the information security and personal data protection.
Education :
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or Biomedical Engineering or related technical field.
Required Experience:
- At least two years of experience in a similar role or academic experience with mechanical, biomedical, or materials testing
- Understanding of material characterization techniques (e.g. mechanical testing, wear analysis, microscopy)
- Experience analyzing and interpreting experimental data, preparing clear and concise reports and presentations.
- Ability to maintain accurate and detailed research documentation
- Demonstrated experience collaborating on technical projects
- Experience in a regulated medical device environment, preferably orthopaedic implants and instrumentation
- Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements (e.g. FDA, MDR, ISO, ASTM)
- Good communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Excellent knowledge of Italian and English
Travel Requirements: The Materials Development team within Enovis is an international team with responsibilities at multiple manufacturing sites. Domestic and international travel of up to 10% may be expected annually.
Desired Characteristics:
• Master’s degree in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Experience in orthopaedic or biomedical research is desired.
• Experience in conducting literature reviews and gathering relevant scientific data on specific medical devices, materials, and technologies
• Familiarity with the processing and production utilization of materials specific to orthopaedic implants (i.e. titanium and titanium alloys, cobalt chromium alloys, medical polymers, and ceramics)
• Familiarity with commonly utilized manufacturing processes (i.e. investment casting, forging, additive manufacturing, machining, finishing)
• Knowledge of biocompatibility and biological interactions between biomaterials and living tissue
• Publications or patents in relevant technical areas
