Senior Backend Engineer

Career path toward Staff Engineer or Engineering Manager within 2-3 years

Salary Range: 55,000 - 70,000 EUR/year + stock options

A leading company in the fintech and digital payments sector is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join their core payments team. You will design and build scalable microservices processing millions of transactions daily across European markets, working closely with product, compliance, and infrastructure teams to deliver secure, high-performance APIs.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement RESTful APIs and event‑driven microservices for payment processing
• Optimize database queries and ensure sub‑100ms response times at scale
• Collaborate with DevOps to manage CI/CD pipelines and Kubernetes deployments
• Conduct code reviews and mentor mid‑level engineers
• Participate in on‑call rotation and incident response
• Contribute to architecture decisions and technical roadmap

Must‑have Requirements

• 5+ years backend development experience with Java or Python
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, Redis and message queues (Kafka/RabbitMQ)
• Experience with microservices architecture and container orchestration
• Understanding of PCI‑DSS compliance and secure coding practices

Nice‑to‑have Requirements

• Experience in fintech or payment processing
• Knowledge of open banking APIs (PSD2)
• Familiarity with Terraform and infrastructure as code
• Contributions to open‑source projects
