Role Overview: We are hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for core Ubuntu components, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management. This is a fast-paced, highly technical role at the core of Linux server systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow a distributed engineering team.
  • Demonstrate active, hands-on engineering leadership.
  • Plan, estimate, and execute projects.
  • Collaborate with product management to define vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams.
  • Promote best practices in software development and organizational culture.
  • Ensure alignment on architecture and roadmaps across teams.
  • Participate in biannual in-person sprints.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm).
  • Proven leadership or management experience in software engineering.
  • Strong knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, and relevant toolchains (Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go), ARM/RISC-V.
  • Engagement with open source communities.
