We are looking for a Senior Protection and Automation Engineer – Customer Service , to be hired with a permanent contract in Milan within the Electrification & Automation Business Unit – Customer Service .

As a Senior Protection and Automation Engineer – Customer Service , you will play a key role in the execution of complex service projects involving revamping, extensions, upgrades, troubleshooting and commissioning activities across power networks and industrial critical infrastructures.

This is a hybrid technical role combining engineering ownership, field execution, and customer-facing leadership. Depending on project needs, you may lead engineering phases, coordinate testing activities, supervise on-site execution, or directly perform mission-critical technical interventions.

You will operate in strategic sectors such as Power Generation, Distribution System Operators (DSO), Transmission System Operators (TSO) and energy-intensive industries.

Some of the main activities will be:

  • Lead the technical execution of complex Customer Service projects involving retrofit, modernization, revamping and extension of electrical installations.
  • Engineer protection, control, automation and communication systems according to customer specifications, grid requirements and applicable standards.
  • Manage and execute MIS, FAT, SAT, commissioning and troubleshooting activities , both remotely and on site.
  • Configure, test and diagnose protection relays, RTUs, automation systems and SCADA interfaces.
  • Act as senior technical reference during outages, shutdowns and urgent service interventions.
  • Interface directly with customers, project managers, field service teams, sales and engineering functions throughout the full project lifecycle.
  • Support root cause analysis, technical reporting, risk mitigation and continuous improvement actions.
  • Contribute to technical mentoring and competence growth of junior engineers and field personnel.
  • Ensure quality, safety, cost awareness and timely delivery of service activities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on digital substations, IEC 61850 architectures, cybersecure automation and evolving grid technologies.
  • Provide technical support during the proposal and tender phase, including scope definition, technical solution design, feasibility assessment, cost and risk evaluation, preparation of technical documentation and clarifications in close collaboration with sales, project management and engineering teams.

To be a perfect fit for this role, you would already have:

  • Proven experience (8+ years) in protection, control, automation or service execution within power infrastructure environments.
  • Strong background in Protection Relays, Substation Automation, SCADA and Communication Protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 104, Modbus, IEC 101, OPC or similar).
  • Hands-on experience in FAT, SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting and site activities on MV/HV systems.
  • Ability to combine engineering mindset with practical field execution.
  • Experience in retrofit / brownfield environments is highly appreciated.
  • Knowledge of Siemens Protection & Automation portfolio (SIPROTEC, SICAM, etc.) is a plus.
  • Degree in Electrical / Electronic / Energy / Automation Engineering or equivalent technical background.
  • Strong ownership, analytical thinking, autonomy and customer orientation.
  • Ability to manage pressure during critical project phases and outages.
  • Passion for continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Respect and appreciation of each person’s uniqueness, willingness to co-create and share knowledge.
  • Proficiency in English and Italian.
  • Availability for business travel across Italy and occasionally abroad.
  • Eligibility to work in Italy.
