Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Data Center, Colocation Regional Engineering – AMER

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This role collaborates with business development, design engineers, data center operations professionals, external vendors and consultants to assess and select colocation facilities that meet our business requirements.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Conduct site assessments against AWS standards for colocation data centers, legacy facility upgrades, and general capital endeavors.
- Perform risk analysis and availability calculations for vendor‑owned and operated colocation data center infrastructure to determine fit‑for‑use/fit‑for‑service.
- Influence AWS design and specification requirements to meet business needs for colocation products.
- Lead and document root‑cause failure analysis associated with infrastructure and equipment failures.
- Work with vendors and local agencies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and codes.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, and commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of critical electrical, mechanical, fire suppression, controls, and structural systems.
- Support operations, data scientists, and other business partners to determine utilization, efficiency, and performance analysis on critical systems.
- Travel to data center sites as required – international and domestic (up to 50%).
A Day in the Life
Each day you will interact with different teams responsible for all aspects of the data centers. You will prioritize activities to support data center capacity, availability, and safety, focusing on the most impactful actions. You will have the opportunity to work on projects locally and globally.
Colo Regional Engineers Responsibilities
- Possess strong engineering judgment and provide recommendations despite uncertainty.
- Be detail‑ and data‑oriented.
- Manage engineering projects and consultants.
- Build trust and relationships with stakeholders.
- Be inclined to get into the field to see things up close.
Basic Qualifications
- 6+ years of data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance experience.
- 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities (e.g., data centers, power generation, oil and gas).
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering or Architectural license.
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region.
- Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment.
- Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
Benefits & Compensation
Base salary range: GA, Atlanta – 136,600.00 – 184,800.00 USD annually; VA, Herndon – 136,600.00 – 184,800.00 USD annually.
